C J Lang & Son, one of the first companies to adopt Voice technology within the warehouse, has found its new Accord™ Voice WMS has, ‘led to ‘dramatic improvements in warehouse productivity and customer service….exceeding our expectations in all areas’, Graham Murdoch, IT Director, CJ Lang.
CJ Lang is Scotland’s largest independent retailing and distribution company, servicing over 45% of Scotland’s independent market from its dedicated Retail Distribution Centre (RDC). The company’s Cash & Carry depots service 7,500 customers a week and provide food deliveries to leisure outlets, industrial, healthcare and education catering establishments throughout Scotland.
To retain its position as Scotland’s premier wholesaler, CJ Lang is continually looking for innovative ways to service its customers as efficiently as possible. In 2002, recognising that its paper-based warehouse management operations were becoming outdated and no longer offered the flexibility required to grow the business, C J Lang started to investigate alternatives to improve accuracy and customer service, looking for a solution that would cover all warehouse activities.
CJ Lang decided to implement Voice technology and BCP was chosen to supply itsAccord Voice WMS solution to control all aspects of operation in its Dundee RDC. BCP’s Voice directed Warehouse Management Software, including the specialist Voice tasks, uses the proven technology and advanced Voice recognition of Vocollect Voice®, supplied by BCP’s partner VoiteQ. Based on its previous experience, CJ Lang was confident that BCP understood its business and the two companies worked together closely throughout the design and development phase of the project to ensure the system would meet CJ Lang’s particular needs.
The 80 user implementation was undertaken in phases to ensure service levels to customers did not suffer during the implementation. Following the installation of a radio frequency (RF) network, Voice was introduced into goods receiving followed by put away, picking and, finally, perpetual inventory, transforming the RDC from a predominantly paper-based operation to one where all warehouse operations are directed and controlled by Voice and the WMS is updated in real time, providing full visibility and a detailed, accurate audit trail.
The introduction of Voice warehouse management technology has produced significant improvements in all areas of warehouse operations at C J Lang. The biggest benefit has been in picking accuracy. Using Voice Picking, errors have been virtually eradicated and accuracy levels are now 99.99%. Picking productivity has also improved by around 10% with some pickers consistently exceeding that. Other benefits include improved safety, significant stationery savings and a reduction of 5 man days’ effort per week in warehouse administration, allowing CJ Lang to redeploy staff more productively, resulting in considerable cost savings. The project has been so successful CJ Lang hopes to extend Voice WMS functionality to its frozen and chilled warehouses.
