BCP is home to an array of technology experts, and Richard Marshall, the Managing Director, is no exception. With extensive experience within the B2B software industry, we sat down with him to discuss how the fast-paced advancements of technology have had a profound impact on his own career and the wholesale businesses he works closely with.

A successful career enabled by tech innovations

Richard’s interest in the world of technology began at the tender age of 12 when he constructed a radio transmitter and used it to broadcast to unsuspecting neighbours. Then, opting for a practical approach over traditional academics, he immersed himself in electronics and robotics which sparked his enduring passion for technology and software. This laid the foundation for a career full of technological exploration and innovation.

His initial years at a small software house were crucial, exposing him to the importance of software systems across various facets of a distribution business. Initially starting as a software developer he expanded his skill set to cover the majority of roles within the business  It was during this period he found a real passion for dealing with customers and solving their business problems.  This passion enabled Richard to utilise his knowledge of software design and development and hone his skills in solution selling—identifying customer challenges and crafting tailored solutions, particularly within ERP  and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS).  He progressed through a successful sales career delivering solutions for businesses across multiple industries from SME’s to leading UK brands.

Richard moved to BCP in 2004 where he was involved in the growth of our various retail, distribution and ecommerce solutions before becoming the Managing Director in 2022.

A continual commitment to digital transformation

Throughout our fascinating conversation, Richard reflects on how far technology has come, from the basic green screen systems to sophisticated cloud-based solutions. “The rise of digital technologies like ecommerce and other online solutions has transformed how businesses operate,” he explains. Richard recalls recognising the commercial importance of ecommerce early on and was an early advocate in helping B2B companies transition from traditional catalogue sales to online sales platforms. “A sceptical move for many at that time,” he says.

For Richard, the allure of technology lies in this continual advancement and the new solutions it can provide to long-standing challenges. “This is the driving force behind BCP that helps us develop software that equips wholesalers with the necessary tools to adapt and succeed in a digital-centric world,” says Richard. “Digital transformations continue to reshape wholesale business models to boost efficiency and profitability,” he explains.

To enable this, BCP commits a considerable proportion of its revenue to Research and Development (R&D) each year. This investment supports the refinement of our existing products and the exploration of new technologies. “It is a testament to our dedication to continuous improvement and innovation,”.

A future full of technological potential

When asked what the future holds in terms of technology advancements, Richard says: “We are entering a new phase of the digital revolution where Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning will be key transformative forces.” This is an exciting new time for the wholesale industry where, as Richard remarks: “AI has the potential to redefine supply chains, revolutionise  forecasting, and deliver better informed data-driven decision-making.”

There is also a significant shift to automation underway, particularly within warehouse management. “As robotics and automation technology become more widely available and cost-effective, wholesalers are utilising these technological advances to enhance efficiency, reduce costs and increase operational resilience,” says Richard.

Richard emphasises that new technologies must not be implemented in isolation for businesses to fully benefit. He states, “To achieve future success, it is crucial to integrate new technologies with existing systems and infrastructures. Businesses need to ensure their current systems and platforms can support these new solutions across all functions and handle the increased data they generate.”

Overall, Richard’s narrative demonstrates how the continual advancement of technology will always be a source of inspiration to individuals and businesses looking for cutting-edge solutions.
